Waging Peace

Posted by Brentford and Isleworth Quakers on Sep 29, 09 12:51 PM in Faith

Wouldn't it be great if there were alternatives to war? There are! Quaker peace workers will be talking about Peace Child International and other projects which attempt to prevent conflict before it happens. These are part of the Quaker run peaceworker scheme to boost organisations working for peace.

Ship.jpgDavid Jones, the furniture maker who made headlines by building a Viking boat in his Isleworth garden in 2005, is giving a talk this Saturday.

Mr Jones built Lille Draken, a 22ft replica of the Gokstad, to aid his research into the sails of the 1066 invasion craft, as seen on the Bayeux tapestry.

The Bishop of London, the Rt. Rev. Richard Chartres met priests, ministers and spiritual heads from Chiswick to Feltham on Monday 30th March and advised them to 'be convinced, be humble, be joyful and look cheerful in your faith'.

Gurdwara-Alice-Way-26.5.07.jpgSikhs have been living in the borough for over 35 years and the gleaming towers of the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha are now a well-known part of the skyline of Hounslow.

On Thursday 5th February there is a chance to hear about the history, principles and every day practices of Sikhism at the Gurdwara in Alice Way, Hounslow TW3 3UA.

Mary-Clarke-EAPPI-volunteer.jpg"I'm only a housewife" said Mary Clarke on Sunday describing her recent work as a human rights observer in Israel-Palestine.

Mary was telling Brentford and Isleworth Quakers and guests about her time as an Ecumenical Accompanier in Jayyous, a village inside the West Bank where farmers are cut off from their lands by the Separation Wall built by the Israeli government

The realities of life in Israel-Palestine will be the subject of a talk at Brentford and Isleworth Quakers on Sunday 12th October.

As part of National Quaker Week, Mary Clarke will be speaking about her time serving as an Ecumenical Accompanier, in a scheme which supports work for peace in the region.

Despite the diversity of the borough of Hounslow, many people still live and socialise in their own communities with little contact with others from different cultures or faiths.

Continuing their programme of informal meetings to bring people together, Hounslow Friends of Faith have organised a talk on the positive values of Islam in the UK.

Awareness of climate change and the need to protect the environment is growing and is not restricted to any one section of the community.

On Saturday, October 4, Hounslow Friends of Faith is bringing together speakers and displays from different faiths to challenge and inspire people to do their bit for the environment.

curry-night.jpgHungry parishioners of St John's Church descended on Euro Balti in Twickenham Road for a special 'hot stuff' charity curry night in aid of crisis-hit people in Mozambique.

The big-hearted crowd packed out the 50-seater Isleworth restaurant, which donated its facilities, and raised £312 in the process, with £6 of every £10 ticket going directly to the cause.
