A TOP comedian will tackle a gruelling swimming challenge for charity.

David Walliams, who found fame in Little Britain with Matt Lucas, hopes to take on the epic 140 mile length of The Thames in just eight days to raise money for Sports Relief.

He will set off from its source in Gloucestershire on Monday September 5, and will pass through Brentford and Chiswick before reaching the finish line of Big Ben.

However, the journey will not just be exhausting, the high concentration of e-coli, salmonella and hepatitis in the river means David runs a serious chance of getting ill.

He said: "Most people in the UK know the Thames, and most people think the idea of swimming in it is horrifying. And it is.

"It'll be relentless. It's a huge distance so I'll need all the support I can get."

People can monitor his GPS tracker on www.sportrelief.com/walliams and follow the Twitter feed using #hash tag #Thamesswim to see when he'll be in Hounslow.
