Great tree for Osterley

An Osterley tree has been named one of the 'Great Trees of London" by a charity.

A Cork Oak in Osterley Park will join the list of leading landmark trees in the capital established by charity Trees for Cities.

Joining 19 other great trees the Oak was nominated by Londoners themselves in a competition judged by an expert panel of horticulturists and other key figures.

Chairman of the Forestry Commission, the RT Hon Lord Clark of Windermere, supports the scheme, he said: "There are more ancient trees in Great Britain than anywhere else in Europe and we need to appreciate them as part of our heritage.

"Many are older than our valued historic buildings and they continue to live and grow.

"Some of them have witnessed the great events of history and they all have interesting stories to tell."

After the Great Storm of 1987, Londoners were asked to nominate the capital's leading landmark/historic trees and 41 were officially awarded "Great Tree" status in 1988 with plaques erected next to each tree.

Since this summer, hundreds of Londoners have been nominating more potential Great Trees after Trees for Cities issued a call for nominations.

We'd like to hear from you.
