Centre's battle to stay afloat

Groups who use a community centre in the heart of Isleworth rallied together at the weekend in a valiant bid to attract more users and stay afloat.

Members of the St John's Community Centre fear that if more local people do not get involved they will not be able to cope with the spiralling costs.

In an attempt to drum up interest an open day was held on Saturday at the centre in St John's Road, where various groups gave demonstrations of the activities.

Donna Eaton, a member of the Isleworth branch of The Embroiderers Guild, one of the societies that use the building, told the Chronicle: "The centre desperately needs more support from the wider community, to join in the activities and consequently help with the ever increasing financial burden.

"The council threatened to close us down last year but we managed to stay afloat by putting up our fees, but we need more people on board to stay open."

Organisations using the centre include the brownies, embroiderers, badminton players and life style groups.
"The roof also needs repairing so that is another cost we have to consider," said Donna.

"We held the open day to make people realise the great things we have going on down here and to make them understand we need their support if we are to keep going. "However we were a bit disappointed with the amount of people that turned up.

"It went very well from the point of view that lots of organisations took part but by lunch time our visitors started dwindling."
