Worton Estate scoops peace award
Dedicated youngsters who cleaned up an Isleworth estate were last night honoured with a 2008 peace award.
Organisers of the clean up campaign, which formed part of the teens' Duke of Edinburgh award, were presented with the Metropolitan Police commissioners community safety peace award at the Royal Gardens Hotel in Kensington.
Councillor Paul Fisher, said: "I am so proud of everyone and the various agencies involved but especially the kids on the estate who have made me even prouder to represent Isleworth and Hounslow in general as a councillor."
The award was presented to proud PC Mike James, who initiated the scheme and Worton estate resident Kim Dobson, by metropolitan police commissioner, Sir Ian Blair and the Rt Hon Jacqui Smith, MP home Secretary.
Joining PC James and Kim at the ceremony, was Bridgette Klempner, from the payback team, schools officer, Phil Beal and Isleworth Councillors, Phil Andrews and Paul Fisher.
PC James said: "I'm really proud. I gathered everyone together to try and do something about the estate and it has worked out better than I ever imagined. All the alleys are so much cleaner and free of graffiti. Everyone involved has done a great job."
The young people carried out a survey of the neighbourhood to identify places where there was graffiti, overgrown shrubbery and fly-tipping as part of a bid to make the estate a more pleasant place to live.
The clean-up has already received a bronze award from the Capital Clean-up campaign for being an "outstanding project."
The Peace Awards recognise contributions to the peace and safety of London's communities through individual or collective endeavour. The Awards, form part of the London Week of Peace.
