Kicking out stigma in Isleworth

Posted by Jessica Thomas on Aug 12, 08 03:11 PM in Clubs/societies

Hounslow Hawks Football Club will be running a football fun day on Sunday 17 August at Old Isleworthians in Wood Lane, Isleworth.

Keen footballers are invited to take part in a four hour five-a-side tournament, between 1-5pm. Other attractions will include penalty shoot-outs, competitions, kid's rides, games and stalls. Refreshments and a barbeque will also be on offer.

Hounslow Hawks is a team for adults who experience mental health problems and is part of the PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) League, a competition especially for people with mental health issues. Within a year of being formed, the team has finished second in the championship league and recently won promotion to the premiership for next season.

Hawks Manager, Michelle Nielsen, said: "The aim of the day is to raise much needed funds so the Hawks can continue to play in the upcoming season.

"There are proven links between exercise and positive mental health and football can be an acceptable way for young people (particularly men) to become more physically active and engage, which can help promote their recovery.

"I'm very proud of the Hawks' success this season and the dedication and commitment of the players. We have a tough road ahead with promotion to the premiership, but I'm confident the team can rise to the challenge and help kick out mental health stigma in the process."

Money raised will assist the Hawks in funding their upcoming season in the premiership of the Positive Mental Attitude league.
