Unique estate project bags award
Dedicated Isleworth youngsters who set up the first Duke of Edinburgh award on a housing estate have scooped a top honour.
The clean-up project on the Worton estate will receive a bronze award from the Capital Clean-Up campaign for being an 'outstanding project'.
Sergeant Kirsty Hayes, of Isleworth Safer Neighbourhood Team which helped set up the scheme at the estate's youth centre, said: "We have a very good relationship with the youth centre and the young people taking part, and are extremely pleased that their project has been rewarded in this way. This award is fantastic news and well deserved."
The young people carried out a survey of the neighbourhood to identify places where there was graffiti, overgrown shrubbery and fly-tipping as part of a bid to make the estate a more pleasant place to live.
Led by PC Mike James and resident Kim Dobson, they then invited London Probation, local councillors, a council Graffiti Officer, Hounslow Homes and officers from the SNT to develop a plan.
Fellow ward councillor Paul Fisher, lead member for service improvement and community engagement, said: "I am immensely proud of all the young people from the area who took part in this, and thank the police and people from the community who supported them. This is a real community achievement."
